Marie Norman, PhD

Professor of Medicine and Clinical and Translational Science, Director, Innovative Design for Education and Assessment (IDEA) Lab, University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Norman holds a dual role within Stackables. As a Contributing Expert, Qualitative Research Methods Stack, Dr. Norman holds a PhD in cultural anthropology with a focus on medical anthropology. In addition to conducting ethnographic research in Nepal, she has used qualitative approaches to study a range of topics in health and education, including the working dynamics of research teams, the uses of human-centered design for research, and the evaluation of education and training programs. She teaches qualitative research methods to Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) students and trainees and mentors graduate, post-doctoral, and early-career investigators. Dr. Norman loves the capacity of qualitative research to open windows into other lives and worldviews.

As a member of the Stackables Leadership Team, Dr. Norman directs the Innovative Design for Education and Assessment (IDEA) Lab, where she oversees the Institute for Clinical Research Education’s (ICRE) online training initiatives. She has taught in higher education and contributed to the scholarship of teaching and learning for over 20 years. Dr. Norman is co-author of the book, How Learning Works: Eight Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (Jossey Bass 2023), which distills learning research into practical teaching strategies. She is the recipient of the Association for Clinical and Translational Research’s Rebecca Jackson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Education Innovation (2023), as well as the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Pittsburgh (2023). A firm believer in the importance of visual design in learning, she endorses her team’s mission to “make learning beautiful.” Stackables were Dr. Norman’s brainchild, and she has led their development.
