Description

Conducting a qualitative interview is both an art and a science. A good interviewer must quickly establish rapport, maintain a connection with the interviewee, probe for detail and clarification when answers are vague or confusing, balance structure and flexibility, steer the conversation, and manage time. These skills will develop with practice; however, there are skills you can learn now that will help guide you.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the need for flexibility when interviewing
  • Practice ’empathic neutrality’ to avoid biasing your data
  • Steer the conversation when interviewees talk too much or too little
  • Practice cultural relativism
